Face shapes & Hairstyles

Some common face shapes

We all have different face shapes because we are all unique just like the different features we have in our faces and bodies. So it just makes sense that our hairstyles should compliment our facial shapes. We want to work with our facial shape and not work against it. So before you decide a haircut, always make sure to know if this hairstyle will suit you or not. Hairstyles are all about putting the right frame on our face to create the perfect balance. Very much like makeup, we need to alter how our hair should be so it works with our contours of our face. Very much like contouring, a hairstyle has the ability to alter how we look; for the good and for the worse. Of course, we want to look better ^_~

So what is the first thing you need to know? Determine your facial shape. Let's get started!

Round Face

If you have a round face, you will find that the length and width of your face is pretty similar. The widest point of your face would be the area that goes from ear to ear. There should be fullness in your face and no harsh corners.

Celebrity example: Drew Barrymore

Suitable hairstyles:

Hairstyles that have alot of height and body helps to make the face appear smaller and less round. Having fringe/bangs that are side swept from a side parting will also give you illusion of a smaller and defined face. I reccomend to have upper layers at least ear length to frame and cup the face to sculpt the face shape to a defined point. You want your hair to look soft and natural looking waves would look perfect. Length wise, as long as you have some layers that frame into your face, you can really go any length. But the key is to have higher hair. Sideswept is the way to go for a slimmer face.

Avoid having one lengthed hair because it will just wrap your head making it appear even rounder. It will look flat and emphasive largeness in the cheeks. Avoid having straight cut fringe/bangs because it will make the face look even rounder. Avoid a centre parting because the symmetic flow of the hair will emphasize fullness.

Oval face

This facial shape is considered the best face to have because it is most versatile as most hairstyles are suitable with this face shape. The jaw line should be just a little narrower than the temples to form a soft oval.

Celebrity example: Jessica Alba

Suitable hairstyles:

In general, you can wear ANY type of hairstyle because it will not work against your face shape because you are considered to have the perfect facial feature. Whether its short, medium or long; sideparting or middle partying, you will look balanced out. In my opinion, you should definately let your feature stand out with alot of updo hairstyles. I reccomend a Bob or Pob nowadays as you call it. This hairstyle really makes your cheekbones pop. You will always suit beach waves which will highlight the small ovalnes of your face.

Avoid any style that will take attention away from your perfect oval face such as a block straight fringe which will shorten the ovalness of your face.

Heart Shaped Face

You will have a forehead/hairline and your chin should be defined to a point. Shaped like a heart.

Celebrity example: Reese Witherspoon

Suitable hairstyles:

Having bangs/fringe will create a narrower illusion of the wider forehead and balance out the harsher corners. Side swept bangs/parting will again, narrow the temples on your face. Rihanna also has a heart shaped face and think of her bob/pob that she has. Its swept swept and the shorts balances the facial structure so it doesn't appear as 'big' near the top and sculpts the jaw line. Chin lengthed or long hairstyles will compliment your face. Most heart shaped faces have killer cheek bones and you want to emphasize that. If you think of Jennifer Aniston; she normally has layers to frame over her face to sculpt her jawline down to give her a softer chin. Waves will look fantastic on heart shaped face girls.

Avoid having a hairstyle that is too high up which will show too much of the forehead to reveal wider temples such as slicked back hair. Don't overdo the volume in your hair, again it will emphasize the larger upper portion of the head.

Rectangular/Oblong Face Shape

Your face will be slender with a strong jaw line structure that is similar width to the temples of your forehead.

Celebrity Example: Gwen Paltrow

Suitable Hairstyles:

You want a hairstyle that will create 'width' to your face to make it wider. Soft fringe/bangs will soften and shorten the length in your face. Gwen's bob does wonderful favours to sculpt her jaw line to appear softer. Her hair almost curtains around her face to create wideness to her facial structure. If you have thicker side layers, it will create more volume to give an illusion of a wider face. Having waves will make the face appear fuller and soften out the stronger corners of your face. Imagine Jessica Sarah Parker and her famous soft waves and how her face appears fuller instead of when its all brushed back. You will also suit a centre parting.

Avoid having hair that is too long because that will lengthen it even more. If you have long hair, remember to give it layers starting from at least your ears. Avoid having a hairstyle that is too short (above your jaw line) which will stretch your facial shape. Stay away from straight cut fringe/bangs which will just highlight the strong jawline.

Square Face Shape

You will have a strong jaw line which is similar width to your hairline. You will also find the length and width is similar too.

Celebrity example: Carmen Electra

Suitable Hairstyles:

Having waves will soften the dominant corners in your face and side swept bangs can define your chin to a point bringing attention away from the jawline. You will also suit a middle parting, if you can imagine having waves that fall softly from your face like Carmen Electra to even out the jaw line. Her big hair/waves make her face appear smaller and gives her a more defined point to her chin.

Avoid straight cut bangs/fringe will just make your face look even more 'square'. You don't want a hairstyle that emphasizes the square jaw line such as long flat hairstyles or one lengthed bob that ends on your chin. You want PLENTY of layers to acheive more roundless to your face.

Diamond face shape

Your face will be widest at your cheekbones which will narrow as it reaches the chin/forehead. Your forehead/jaw line should be narrowed to a point.

Celebrity example: Jennifer Aniston

Suitable hairstyles:

You would want to sculpt the widest in your cheek line area so it sculpts into an oval shape. Jennifer Aniston softens the strong jaw line by having waves that sculpt the wider jaw so its rounder and less angular. See the dramatic differences of Jen when her hair just falls from a middle parting to define her face into an oval shape? The widest points of her face is narrowed. Big hair will reduce emphasis on the wider areas of your face.

Avoid straight cut block fringe/bangs which will make your face squashed and unbalanced.

So what's my face shape?

I have a round face and I wear more volume in my hair to give an illusion of a smaller face. My hair is side parted to define it to a point and my fringe/bangs are side swept again to narrow down my face and highlight my cheekbones. I have plenty of layers in my hair again to add height and volume.

And that's it guys, I hope you guys have learnt a little about face shapes. Man! This took me 2 hours to type this o_O! Ok, so don't say I don't make effort on Bubzbeauty.com ^_^. I decided to type this after a busy working day on a Saturday night. Stay well guys! Love you!
